Renowned Hollywood actor Ghassan Massoud shared insights into his acting career and ethical stances during an event in Istanbul.

The 65-year-old Syrian actor spoke at the “TRT 12 Punto” platform, moderated by Egyptian film critic and FIPRESCI head Ahmed Shawky.

Ghassan Massoud’s early life, challenges in acting scene

Massoud emphasized that acting should not be treated solely as a profession. He believes dreams can be more freely communicated through art without the constraints of professional pressures.

“I feel more free when acting. I had doubts about whether I could act because I grew up in a rural area where acting was not considered a viable profession,” he said.

He faced several challenges in his pursuit of acting, including societal expectations and religious beliefs. “Families in rural areas want their children to work, and some families do not accept acting for religious reasons. My father, however, was understanding and supported me,” he recounted.

Initially, Massoud focused on mastering Arabic. “My father wanted me to work in Islamic jurisprudence, which I did, but I eventually pursued my own dreams,” he shared.

‘Understanding history is essential,’ Massoud says

Massoud stressed the importance of combining talent with academic knowledge. “Being an artist and an academic is crucial. Talent alone is not enough. One must understand the technical aspects of acting and be knowledgeable in various fields.”

He advised young actors to work hard and focus on their goals without fear of failure. “Always keep your goals in mind and focus on yourself. Study the history of acting and art continuously. Understanding history is essential to see the differences between the past and present,” he said.

Massoud’s view on theatre, television, Hollywood

Discussing the distinctions between theatre, television, and film, Massoud said he considers theatre the pinnacle of art.

“In theatre, you learn how to use your voice and movements. Television limits you to certain angles and demands specific actions,” he explained.

He continued, “Cinema is different; you have to showcase your talents within a limited timeframe, relying on the director to bring out your best.”

Massoud’s journey from Syria to Hollywood began with portraying significant historical figures. He recalled being chosen from 1500 candidates for a role in London.

“I had little hope, but after insisting for a month, I auditioned and got the role,” he said. His career then took him to Spain and eventually Hollywood, where he felt he would make a mark.

‘I prefer roles that align with my beliefs and values’

Ghassan revealed that he refused to play terrorist roles in Hollywood, despite receiving numerous offers. “I rejected all roles that portrayed Muslims as terrorists. I prefer roles that align with my beliefs and values,” he explained. He highlighted his role as Sheikh in “Kurtlar Vadisi Irak” as an example of a character he was proud to portray.

Massoud maintains strict ethical standards, refusing roles that conflict with his values. “I have red lines that no one can cross. I come from a specific community and represent it. I cannot accept roles that show my body inappropriately,” he stated.

Comparing Hollywood to Arab world

Reflecting on the differences between Hollywood and the Arab world, he noted, “In Hollywood, everything is provided for you, but in the Arab world, we serve the crew, even carrying cameras ourselves.” He stressed that acting is a universal language and that an actor carries their art within them.

Massoud studied theatre at university in Damascus and furthered his education in Germany and France. He also taught acting and directed for 16 years. “I loved working and continued to contribute to theatre in Syria. I learned about different cultures and art forms, blending them into my own art.”

Ghassan Massoud’s unwavering dedication to his craft, ethical principles, and commitment to lifelong learning have made him a respected figure in the world of acting.

His journey from rural Syria to Hollywood serves as an example for aspiring actors, showing that integrity and perseverance can lead to success.
