28 years of passion: Italian archeologist’s deep connection to Arslantepe
Italian archaeologist professor Francesca Balossi Restelli, who has been leading the excavations at Arslantepe Hoyuk in Malatya, Türkiye, for 28 years, considers the site her second home. Her journey began in 1996 during her university years, and since then, Arslantepe has become an integral part of her life.
Recalling her first year at Arslantepe, Restelli describes it as if it were yesterday. “I can’t remember life before Arslantepe. It feels like I’ve always been here,” she said. Her profound connection to the site is evident as she shares her experiences and observations from her years of work.
Lasting passion for Arslantepe
Restelli first joined the excavations as a student in 1996. Her initial encounter with the site was marked by the discovery of a royal tomb, a significant find that left a lasting impression on her.
“It was a very special year because we found a royal tomb. I was extremely lucky and excited to work on such a significant discovery,” she noted.
Since that pivotal moment, she has returned annually, finding it challenging to describe her feelings toward the site, which she now considers a home.
Family-like atmosphere among team
Restelli views the excavation team as a family, a sentiment that extends to her personal life.
“I brought my child here, and they grew up among us. Fridays are our day off, but we always go somewhere together. We spend all day together. Being a family is crucial for our work,” she explained.
The team’s dynamics are carefully curated to ensure both professional expertise and personal compatibility.
Enduring memories of early excavations
Reflecting on early days, Restelli recalls the cold nights spent by the royal tomb, where one of their workers, Mehmet Ekin, known as “Ince Mehmet,” stayed by the site nearly every night. Despite the harsh conditions, Mehmet’s dedication was unwavering.
“We used to bring him coffee in the mornings. Those were busy and special times,” Restelli reminisced.
The ongoing excavations at Arslantepe continue to yield significant materials, underscoring the site’s importance and the passion of those involved in uncovering its history.
