Denmark plans to increase its defense expenditure by an additional $5.1 billion over the next four years to expedite investments in military capabilities. The government has cautioned that Russia is preparing for a protracted conflict.

As the war in Ukraine enters its 800th day with no clear end in sight, European countries are intensifying their efforts to increase military funding.

Since the decision to implement the Danish Defense Agreement last summer, the security situation in Europe has deteriorated. According to Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, Russia is making preparations for a protracted conflict and may become a potential menace to NATO allies in the coming years.

The Danish government recently declared its intention to further augment the nation’s defense expenditure between 2024 and 2028. Denmark had previously pledged to allocate $21 billion toward defense expenditures over the next 10 years.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Denmark’s defense expenditure for 2023 amounted to $8.1 billion, representing a significant 39% rise compared to the previous year.

Denmark will allocate the supplementary funds to strengthen its primary heavy brigade, designated as the country’s foremost contingent for the NATO Response Force. This will involve procuring additional land-based air defense systems and enhancing the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

According to NATO standards, the unit in question must be capable of rapid deployment and equipped with new tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
