Inauguration of Istanbul’s Gayrettepe-Kagithane metro line marks completion of vital connection

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan marked a significant milestone on Monday as he inaugurated the Gayrettepe-Kagithane metro line in Istanbul. With the addition of this new line, the rail network of the metropolis has now extended to 338.5 kilometers (over 200 miles).

“The length of the completed rail system networks in Istanbul is now reaching 338.5 kilometers,” Erdogan said at the opening ceremony of the Gayrettepe-Kagithane metro station.

During the ceremony, Erdogan expressed his satisfaction with the project, emphasizing its role in alleviating the persistent traffic challenges that have plagued Istanbul for years. He reminded attendees of the successful launch of the Istanbul Airport – Kagithane metro last year, emphasizing the significance of the current inauguration in creating a more interconnected and accessible city.

The new section is expected to drastically reduce travel times and improve daily commutes for thousands of Istanbul residents, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and the quality of life for its citizens.

“We have shared the chronic issues of Istanbul with the people of Istanbul alongside our AK Party candidate for Istanbul, Murat Kurum. With our project package named System Istanbul, we aim to restore Istanbul to its deserved status,” Erdogan stated in his speech, outlining the goals for the city.

“Our goal for the upcoming period is to decrease the average travel time from 64 minutes to 39 minutes, effectively addressing and eliminating the issue of traffic congestion,” he said.

“We aim to increase the total length of the rail system to 650 kilometers by the year 2029,” Erdogan added.
