‘You can’t step into same river twice’: Erdogan rejects federal solution for Cyprus peace
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dismissed the possibility of a federal solution for Cyprus peace on Saturday during his visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation.
“You cannot step into the same river twice. We believe that a federal solution is not possible in Cyprus,” the Turkish president maintained.
He reiterated his stance on Turkish Cypriot rights, adding: “If you want a solution, we say, establish the sacred rights of the Turkish Cypriots. I also conveyed this message personally to the Greek Prime Minister.”
President Erdogan recalled that Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias criticized the Turkish military presence in the region during a press conference after meeting with his Greek Cypriot counterpart.
‘One heart, one wrist’
“May the souls of the brave who sacrificed for our flag and homeland rest in peace,” Erdogan said, emphasizing unity and solidarity.
“Today, just as we did 50 years ago, we stand together with one heart and one wrist. The presence of the ruling party and opposition here underscores our commitment to Cyprus,” the president noted.
Erdogan highlighted the TRNC’s importance, noting, “This place represents not only our martyrs but also our ancestors who conquered these lands.”
He also pointed out that the celebratory spirit in Cyprus is mirrored by a festive atmosphere in Türkiye, stating: “The enthusiasm and joy of that day are reflected in Türkiye as well.”
Confronting Greek remarks
Addressing comments by Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, Erdogan criticized a “spoiled mentality” in Greek Cyprus.
“In the south (Greek Cyprus), there is a mentality that sees itself as the sole ruler of Cyprus. The Greek Cypriot leader honors terrorists, and mosques in the south are being set on fire. Greeks show no intention of sharing the island’s resources with Turkish Cypriots,” Erdogan said.
Good news for students
In a positive development for education, Erdogan announced a new policy for Turkish Cypriot students: “Starting in July, Turkish Cypriot students will follow the same rules as Turkish students regarding contribution and tuition fees.”
“We will share our bread and water,” he concluded with a note of shared commitment.
The commemoration featured a grand ceremony at the Ataturk Monument, during which Erdogan delivered statements reflecting the occasion’s historical and political significance.
