Main opposition leader considers Syria visit following Erdogan’s statement
Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Ozgur Ozel expressed willingness to meet with Syrian regime leader Bashar Assad. Ozel said his party is exploring the possibility of visiting Syria.
During a recent television appearance, Ozel made statements regarding Syrian refugees, indicating his readiness to take proactive steps, including a potential meeting with Assad.
“I am prepared to take initiative in this matter. If necessary, I am willing to meet with Assad to establish dialogue channels between Türkiye and Syria. We are currently exploring the groundwork for this, and there have been positive developments. When the time is right, we will announce it. I will convey our firm demand for Assad to engage in dialogue with Türkiye.
‘We are committed to taking action’
He further added, “Whether it’s facilitation, mediation, or the responsibility of the main opposition, we are committed to taking action. Because this issue cannot be resolved without sitting down at the negotiating table.”
“The situation (Syrian refugees) has reached a point where Türkiye can no longer bear it. Discussions will focus on the conditions under which Syrian citizens in Türkiye can safely return to Syria. Naturally, there are political dimensions to consider. Assad must provide certain assurances, and Türkiye may need to outline specific guarantees. Economic investments may also be necessary. We could potentially offer incentives, including facilitating visas for those born in Türkiye who wish to return,” he added.
Erdogan open to restoring ties
President Erdogan on Friday said that he is open to restoring ties with Syria adding, “The Syrian people are our brothers. There is no reason not to establish diplomatic relations.”
