Iraq’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hisham Al-Alawi emphasized the importance of the “Development Road” project in furthering economic integration between Iraq and Türkiye.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Al-Alawi discussed the broader implications of this collaboration and the strengthening of bilateral ties.

Enhancing bilateral relations through high-level visits

Al-Alawi noted that the recent high-level visits between Iraq and Türkiye, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan‘s visit to Iraq in April, have been instrumental in advancing mutual interests.

He pointed to the visits of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein to Türkiye as crucial in bolstering the relationship.

“These visits, based on shared interests, have contributed significantly to strengthening bilateral ties,” Al-Alawi said. “We signed several memorandums of understanding (MOUs) during these visits, demonstrating both sides’ commitment to filling gaps and advancing relations.”

Why Development Road Project matters?

  • The Development Road Project is poised to enhance trade and transportation between Iraq and Türkiye, two nations with longstanding economic and cultural ties.
  • The initiative could boost regional integration, benefiting countries across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
  • High-level visits between Iraqi and Turkish leaders reflect a growing commitment to collaboration on shared interests.

The significance of the Development Road Project

Al-Alawi further highlighted that the Development Road Project is a key initiative for enhancing economic integration between Iraq and Türkiye.

The project is seen as a significant step in improving trade and transportation links between the two countries, facilitating the movement of goods and people.

“This project is not only important for Iraq and Türkiye but also for the entire region,” Al-Alawi stated. “Countries such as Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Iran, Southeast Asian nations, and certain European countries will also benefit from this initiative.”

“Given the numerous issues we face, it is vital to maintain high-level engagements,” he added. “We are committed to continuing these visits to further enhance our bilateral relations and realize our common goals.”
