US officials announce a full-scale retaliation campaign against Iran-backed militants that could last weeks

After the drone strike on a base in Jordan which killed three American service members, US officials on Wednesday said that the US plans a full-scale retaliation campaign against Iran-backed militants. Officials briefing the media have said that this operation will be staged in phases and might take several weeks before it is complete.

In addition to the Iranian territory, it is reported that the reach of the campaign will also cover the interests of Iran situated outside its geographical borders. Conventional military strikes along with cyber operations will have an important role during the course of the planned campaign in this wide-ranging retaliation move.

In his address, President Joe Biden said he had reached a final decision on what to do about the drone strike. The administration has also stressed the need for a balanced yet firm response so as to ensure that American interests are secured and the region is stable.

The Iranian government sent Washington a tough message following these assertions as they denied any involvement in the attack. Iranian authorities highlighted their readiness to take a firm and decisive reaction to any assault on Iranian territory or interests. However, the tension continues with both nations closely watching the political scenario.
