Mounting humanitarian crisis in Gaza, ceasefire talks with Israel

On Thursday, Hamas indicated its openness to a cease-fire agreement with Israel but stopped short of accepting a U.S-backed proposal announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. The group maintained its longstanding demand that any ceasefire must result in a complete end to the war.

Despite international calls for a cease-fire, Israeli forces have carried out a deadly campaign in Gaza, resulting in more than 56,600 Palestinian deaths since October 2023, with the majority being women and children.

In response to these events, last November, the issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Additionally, Israel currently faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military operations in the enclave.
