Iraq and the U.S. set to resume talks on future of international military coalition

Iraq and the U.S. are to resume talks over the future of the U.S.-led international military coalition on Sunday, the Iraqi military spokesperson Yahya Rasool stated Thursday.

Iraq’s army spokesperson, Yahya Rasool, criticized the U.S.-led military coalition, stating that it has become a “factor for instability” and is pushing the Iraqi government to consider ending the coalition’s mission in the country.

This development comes in the wake of a recent strike targeting a senior commander from Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-aligned armed group in Iraq. Pentagon sources have linked this strike to an attack that resulted in the deaths of three U.S. soldiers in Jordan.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken defended the strikes, stating that Washington intends to “prevent escalation” rather than fuel it.

The incident underscores the ongoing tension in the region, with Iraq expressing growing dissatisfaction with the U.S.-led coalition’s operations on its soil and the U.S. defending its actions as necessary to prevent further conflict escalation.

The situation remains complex, and diplomatic efforts will likely be crucial in addressing the concerns raised by Iraq.
