Fuel tanker explosion in northern Nigeria kills 94, injures 50
A fuel tanker explosion in northern Nigeria‘s Jigawa state has left 94 people dead and at least 50 others injured, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred late Tuesday on the Kano-Hadeja highway after the tanker crashed and spilled fuel onto the road. Many of the victims had gathered to collect the spilled fuel when the tanker exploded.
Jigawa State Police spokesperson Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed the death toll on Wednesday, stating: “We have so far confirmed 94 people dead and around 50 injured.” The injured are receiving medical care, and officials fear the death toll could rise further.
Cause of explosion under investigation
The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear. Firefighters and emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene shortly after the blast. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash and the subsequent explosion.
Emergency services on high alert
Rescue operations are continuing, with medical personnel working to treat the injured. Several of those wounded are reported to be in critical condition, raising concerns about the possibility of more fatalities in the coming days.
Nigeria has experienced several such incidents in recent years due to unsafe transportation of fuel and poor road conditions.
