U.S. President Biden sends warm wishes to the Muslim community during Ramadan, promises support for Gaza, and denounces discrimination against Muslims

Extending heartfelt greetings to Muslims worldwide at the commencement of Ramadan, U.S. President Joe Biden has acknowledged the plight of the Palestinian people and committed to spearheading global initiatives to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza. He vowed to tirelessly work toward securing an immediate and lasting cease-fire in the region for a minimum of six weeks.

In a statement released on Sunday, Biden expressed his and first lady Jill’s best wishes and prayers for Muslims both in the U.S. and across the globe as they observe this sacred month of reflection and renewal.

Recognizing the immense suffering inflicted upon the Palestinian populace due to the conflict in Gaza, Biden emphasized the significance of this moment of pain as Muslims gather to break their fast in the following days and weeks. He underscored his personal concern for the situation, noting that some of the casualties in Gaza are relatives of American Muslims who are mourning their loss. With nearly 2 million Palestinians displaced and in dire need of essential supplies like food, water, medicine, and shelter, Biden affirmed the U.S.’ commitment to delivering life-saving aid to Gaza promptly.

In his address, Biden outlined the ongoing efforts to establish a sustained cease-fire and work toward a future of stability, security, and peace in the region, emphasizing the necessity of a two-state solution for Palestinians and Israelis to coexist with equal measures of freedom, dignity, security, and prosperity. The U.S. will continue to take the lead in coordinating international humanitarian assistance to Gaza through various channels, including land, air, and sea routes.

Highlighting the concerning rise in hate and violence targeting Muslim Americans within the country, Biden unequivocally denounced Islamophobia, stating that it has no place in a nation founded on principles of religious freedom and enriched by the contributions of immigrants, including Muslims. He announced the development of the inaugural National Strategy to Combat Islamophobia and Related Forms of Bias and Discrimination, aimed at combating hatred against Muslim, Sikh, South Asian, and Arab American communities wherever it surfaces.

Addressing Muslims across America, Biden affirmed their integral role in the nation’s fabric and extended solidarity to those grappling with grief amid the ongoing conflicts. He reassured them of his support and encouraged them to draw strength from their faith, families, and communities during these challenging times. As Ramadan commences, Biden wished all observing a safe, healthy, and blessed month ahead, concluding with the traditional greeting, “Ramzan kareem.”
