Türkiye’s 8th Antarctic expedition completes 36-day journey
The eighth National Antarctic Science Expedition, led by a dedicated team of 24 Turkish researchers, successfully concluded its 36-day journey, providing invaluable insights into the continent’s diverse facet
The eighth National Antarctic Science Expedition, led by a team of 24 Turkish researchers, concluded after a 36-day journey. The expedition marks a significant milestone in Türkiye’s scientific exploration efforts in Antarctica.
Over the course of the journey, the team conducted extensive studies covering a wide range of disciplines, including environmental and pollution, oceanography, atmospheric conditions, and geological investigations.
The team conducted operations across islands and research bases, collaborating with international scientists, showcasing active participation in Antarctic scientific endeavors.
Starting from Horseshoe Island, where the scientific camp is situated, the team explored Dismal Island, traversed channels, and visited Deception Island.
Collaborating with Spanish and Bulgarian scientists, they conducted logistical operations, enhancing global collaboration in Antarctic research.
The team faced stormy seas and adverse weather conditions, leading to a monthlong wait on the Chilean-flagged ship Betanzos. During this time, researchers continued their projects and engaged in academic activities.
Captain Dogac Baybars Isiler, responsible for logistics, navigation, and safety, emphasized the expedition’s encounter with numerous icebergs and highlighted safety measures.
He underscored the importance of addressing climate change and prioritizing safety during sea navigation in Antarctica.
Safety training, including navigation precautions, was provided to researchers to ensure the team’s well-being and the expedition’s overall success.
