Turkish defense company Aselsan has announced a significant milestone in its collaboration with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), integrating the Korkut Air Defense System onto the Wahash 8×8 armored vehicle, developed by UAE-based Calidus.

The announcement was made at the IDEX 2025 defense exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

Türkiye’s strengthens presence in Gulf region

Aselsan General Manager Ahmet Akyol, speaking exclusively to SavunmaSanayiST at the IDEX 2025, emphasized the company’s long-standing operations in the Gulf region and its strategy to expand through local partnerships.

“The Gulf region is a crucial market, and we have been active here for many years, both directly and through local partnerships,” Akyol said. “We have an established presence in Abu Dhabi and are engaged in several other countries in the region.”

Akyol highlighted Aselsan’s collaboration with Calidus, particularly in integrating the Korkut Air Defense System onto 8×8 wheeled armored vehicles.

Korkut’s enhanced capabilities

Korkut is designed to counter drone swarms, kamikaze drones, and other aerial threats. Akyol noted the system’s operational success in multiple environments.

“Korkut is proving highly effective in neutralizing various aerial threats. It carries smart munitions and has been adapted for different platforms, including 25mm versions,” he added.

The system was previously integrated onto Otokar’s Arma 8×8 vehicle in 2023 and is now making its debut on the Wahash 8×8 armored vehicle.

Strategic agreement at IDEX 2025

On the second day of IDEX 2025, Aselsan and Calidus formalized their partnership with a cooperation agreement.

The Turkish Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) announced the agreement via its official X account, stating, “Our defense industry continues to establish strong partnerships at IDEX 2025.”

Additionally, agreements were signed between Aselsan and Calidus, as well as BASE and Calidus, with SSB head Haluk Gorgun as the witness.

The agreements aim to enhance technological cooperation, production capabilities, and joint development projects.

Technical features of Korkut

Korkut, originally designed for use on tracked armored vehicles, has now been adapted for wheeled platforms like the Wahash 8×8.

The system includes:

  • 35mm twin-barrel cannon, capable of firing 1,100 rounds per minute.
  • Integration of ATOM 35mm programmable airburst ammunition for increased effectiveness against drones and missiles.
  • Stabilized turret for firing on the move and tracking airborne threats.
  • Advanced target tracking systems, including radar and electro-optical sensors.
