Three U.S. and Israeli officials have indicated that an Iranian attack on Israel could occur as soon as Monday. Iranian and Hezbollah leaders have vowed to retaliate for the assassinations of senior leaders Fuad Shukr (Hezbollah) and Ismail Haniyeh (Hamas).

Retaliation may mimic April 13 attack, involve Hezbollah

The U.S. is planning to respond to these threats by increasing its military presence in the Middle East and deploying more warships and fighter jets to the region.

U.S. officials anticipate that any Iranian retaliation might mimic the April 13 attack but on a larger scale, potentially involving Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Biden administration is concerned about the difficulty in rallying the same coalition that defended Israel in April because of the current context of the Israel-Hamas war, which has fueled anti-Israel sentiments across the region.

Behind scenes

US Gen. Kurilla’s visit will include stops in several Gulf countries, Jordan, and Israel. Jordan is a crucial ally in the eyes of the U.S., having played a significant role during the April 13 incident by intercepting Iranian drones and allowing U.S. and Israeli jets to use their airspace.

The Pentagon and CENTCOM have not provided immediate comments. U.S. and Israeli officials remain uncertain if Iran and Hezbollah will coordinate their attacks or operate independently, noting that both are still finalizing their military plans.

A U.S. official mentioned that the announcement of boosted U.S. forces was timed to deter Iran and Hezbollah as they deliberate their response strategies.

US Gen. Michael Kurilla’s trip to the Middle East was initially planned before the recent escalation between Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah. However, he is now expected to leverage this trip to mobilize the international and regional coalition that previously defended Israel from an Iranian attack on April 13, according to a U.S. official.

Statements

On Saturday, President Biden expressed uncertainty about Iran’s potential actions, stating, “I hope so. I don’t know,” when asked if he thinks Iran will stand down.

In Israel, Major General Rafi Milo, Commander of the Home Front Command, held a meeting to assess the current situation and preparations. Emphasizing the need for readiness, he stated: “We are determined to continue fighting until we fundamentally change the security situation in the north and can return the residents home safely.”

We are preparing and ready for any scenario and any response In the last few days, we, both the IDF and the Home Front Command, greatly strengthened its readiness in close cooperation, both with the local authorities and with all the IDF units. Currently, the rear works without restrictions. We will change the instructions according to the assessment of the situation We distribute and refine the instructions all the time, also in the systems and websites of the Home Front Command and I say once again that it is important to adhere to the Home Front Command’s instructions. it’s a lifesaver”
