Türkiye pledges strong economic cooperation for Syria’s reconstruction
Türkiye has signaled its commitment to strong economic cooperation for Syria’s reconstruction after the 61-year rule of the Baath regime ended in early December 2024, leaving the country with significant economic and infrastructure challenges.
On Tuesday, Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat, along with representatives from Turkish business chambers, industrialists, and NGOs in the economy and trade sectors, met to discuss Syria’s rebuilding and strengthening its economy.
The meeting focused on establishing a sustainable state structure and ensuring peace and security in Syria.
The Ministry of Trade stressed the need for strong cooperation between Türkiye and Syria to create a politically and economically stable environment after Syria’s 13-year civil war.
Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime forces seized Damascus on Dec. 8, 2024, marking the end of Baath Party rule.
The Baath regime’s attacks on Syria’s infrastructure and population, aimed at maintaining power, left the economy in ruins. The civil war, which began in 2011, further stunted the country’s development and depleted its human resources. The war destroyed homes, businesses, and schools, disrupted electricity distribution, and displaced 6 million people abroad and 7 million internally.
