Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida welcomed Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in Tokyo on Monday to discuss Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts, announcing a new bilateral tax treaty and beginning negotiations for an investment treaty.
Despite Japan’s inability to provide direct military support due to restrictions on the export of lethal weapons, it has pledged over $10 billion in financial aid to Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.
Shmyhal expressed gratitude for Japan’s support, emphasizing the significance of the meeting for bilateral relations.
Meanwhile, in the U.S., President Joe Biden faces challenges in securing approval for a $95.34 billion military aid package for Ukraine.
At a conference attended by approximately 50 Japanese companies, deals were signed with Ukrainian counterparts in various sectors such as agriculture, energy, and infrastructure, although the total value of these agreements was not disclosed.
