U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly sent a private message to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, urging Iraq to support the formation of a new Syrian government and limit the influence of armed groups operating outside state control.

Trump’s message delivered in a confidential visit

According to Iraqi media reports citing an unnamed source, Trump’s message was conveyed through a representative during a confidential visit to Iraq.

In the communication, Trump requested measures to neutralize armed groups operating independently of state authority and limit their activities.

The message also reportedly emphasized the need to curb Iran-linked groups’ operations, prevent Iraq’s direct involvement in Syria, and encourage support of a prospective new Syrian government.

Iraq’s diplomatic efforts for regional stability

An Iraqi government source noted that Baghdad remains committed to fostering regional stability and security. The source indicated that Prime Minister Sudani plans to share Iraq’s perspective on these matters during an upcoming visit to Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei recently announced that Sudani would visit Tehran next week.

However, there has been no official confirmation from the Iraqi government regarding the visit.
