Türkiye’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ahmet Yildiz, called on Syria’s new administration on Wednesday to take control of camps for displaced persons and detained Daesh terrorists. Speaking to the Security Council, Yildiz stressed the need for the elimination of Daesh, PKK, YPG from Syria’s future.

“There is no place for either Daesh or PKK/YPG in the future of Syria,” Yildiz said. “Putting an end to the existence of these terrorist groups is a prerequisite for a peaceful, independent, and politically unified Syria.”

Yildiz emphasized Türkiye’s readiness to cooperate with Syria in the fight against terrorism, noting that the new Syrian administration had shown determination in this regard.

Additionally, Yildiz called for an end to the foreign exploitation of Syria’s natural resources, particularly oil and gas, arguing that these resources should be returned to the Syrian people to help build a prosperous Syria.

He also reiterated that foreign elements within terrorist groups must be removed from Syria and that the remaining PKK/YPG elements should disarm.

“Terrorist organizations in northeast Syria use Daesh camps and prisons for propaganda to justify their existence,” Yildiz said. “It is time to transfer the security of these camps and prisons to the new administration.”

Türkiye expressed its readiness to support Syria in managing the camps and prisons and urged the international community to assist in the repatriation of Daesh detainees.

The PKK, which waged a 40-year terror campaign against Türkiye, is classified as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the U.S., and the EU. The YPG is the Syrian offshoot of the PKK.
