Washington Post sees mass cancellations, resignations after Harris endorsement halt
The Washington Post has been hit with a significant wave of digital subscription cancellations following owner Jeff Bezos’s decision to block an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election.
More than 200,000 subscribers canceled by midday Monday, according to two sources familiar with internal metrics. This represents about 8% of the Post’s total paid circulation, including both digital and print subscribers. The cancellation numbers were reportedly still increasing as of Monday afternoon.
The newspaper’s chief executive and publisher, Will Lewis, on Friday described the decision not to endorse any candidate this year—or in future elections—as a reflection of the Post’s longstanding identity as an “independent paper.”
However, the decision has raised questions among staff and readers alike, with many skeptical of the timing, just days before a close contest between Harris and former President Donald Trump.
