The sixth annual Didim Olive Festival in Aydin’s Didim district captivated attendees with its vibrant events, including culinary competitions, educational seminars, and a groundbreaking record attempt for the largest group olive oil tasting.

The sixth annual Didim Olive Festival in Aydin’s Didim district delighted attendees with a variety of events. These included culinary competitions, informative seminars and an attempt to set a world record for the largest group olive oil tasting.

Over three days, locals and visitors gathered to celebrate the rich olive oil heritage of the region, showcasing a variety of products derived from locally grown olives.

Colorful procession marks start of festival

The festival kicked off with a lively procession through the town. The local community, including municipal officials, walked alongside camels, a symbol of Yoruk (Turkish nomads) culture, leading the way to the historic Apollon Temple, where the main festivities took place.

The event’s ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the beginning of a three-day celebration featuring traditional music, dance, and local delicacies. Various stands displayed and sold olive oils, soaps, and other products from regional producers.

Spotlight on olive oil products and local culture

Throughout the festival, visitors had the chance to taste and purchase olive oils and other products made from locally sourced olives. Competitions featuring olive oil-based dishes drew in food enthusiasts, while informative seminars offered insights into olive oil production, tasting, and its health benefits. Producers expressed their satisfaction with the festival, noting it as a fruitful opportunity to connect with customers and promote their products.

Historic record attempt for olive oil tasting

One of the festival’s main attractions was a record-breaking olive oil tasting session held at the ancient Apollon Temple. With participation from 3,000 people, this event was the first of its kind in Türkiye.

Each participant received a small bottle of olive oil at the entrance, and professor Fugen Durlu Ozkaya provided guidance on proper tasting techniques. The event concluded with the entire group tasting olive oil simultaneously, marking a momentous occasion for the festival and setting a new standard for mass tastings.
