Israeli airstrike kills Anadolu cameraman Hassan Hamad, raising Gaza journalist toll to 175

An Israeli airstrike killed Hassan Hamad, a freelance cameraman for Anadolu, Türkiye’s state-run news agency, on Sunday, raising the number of journalists killed in Gaza since last October to 175, according to the Gaza government media office.

Hamad was killed in Israeli shelling that hit his house in the Jabalia, northern Gaza. His body was taken to Kamal Adwan Hospital.

Mohammed Hamad, Hassan’s brother, said he could barely recognize him after the attack. “I could only recognize him by his hair,” he said, noting the devastation left by the shelling.

Hassan Hamad had been on duty since Saturday, covering Israeli attacks on northern Gaza.

The Gaza Media Office condemned the attack, stating, “We condemn in the strongest terms the targeting, killing, and assassination of Palestinian journalists by the Israeli occupation.” It called on the international community to “deter the occupation and prosecute Israel in international courts for its ongoing crimes.”

Despite a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire, Israel has continued its offensive on Gaza following the October 7 attack by Hamas.

Since then, nearly 41,900 people, mostly women and children, have been killed, with over 97,000 others injured, according to local health authorities.
