Russia claims US plans ‘color revolution’ in Georgia
Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has alleged that the United States is planning a “color revolution” in Georgia’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
According to an SVR statement, parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place in Georgia on Oct. 26.
The statement asserted that the U.S. is dissatisfied with the current situation in Georgia ahead of the elections, noting: “Americans are planning to organize a color revolution in Georgia. During the planned protests, allegations of election fraud will be highlighted, with demands for a change in government.”
“Law enforcement will be incited to suppress the protests forcibly. Washington is providing additional financial support to young opposition forces who will lead post-election protests.”
The statement also suggests that the ruling Georgian Dream Party could gain public confidence in the elections, and thus efforts will be made to prevent the party from securing victory.
It further claims that the U.S. will increase its pressure on Georgia before the elections and impose sanctions on certain individuals.
