Each year the Karanlik (Dark) Canyon in Erzincan’s Kemaliye district transforms into a breathtaking spectacle for only 10 days.

During this limited ten-day period, the sun’s descent over the Munzur Mountains and the Karasu River creates a mesmerizing scene visible only from a specific vantage point in the canyon. Tourists take boat trips to a designated area where the view is most spectacular.
Guven Gurdal, a local tourism operator, says, “Tourists from many countries come here to see this moment. We take them by boat to the part of the canyon with the best view. At sunset, the sun sets right in the middle of Karanlik Canyon, creating an extraordinary sight.”

This phenomenon begins in early July and lasts only 10 days. Nature enthusiasts and photographers find it a must-see event. “The sunset over Karanlik Canyon is an amazing view,” said Gurdal.
