Russia on verge of developing cancer vaccine, Putin says

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russian scientists are on the verge of developing cancer vaccines, expected to be available to patients soon

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday that Russian scientists are on the verge of creating vaccines for cancer, which could soon be available for patients. 

During a Moscow forum on future technologies, Putin mentioned the development of “cancer vaccines and immunomodulatory drugs of a new generation” and expressed hope for their effective use as individual therapy methods. 

While the specific types of cancer targeted were not specified, Putin’s statement aligns with global efforts in cancer vaccine development. Several countries and companies, such as BioNTech, Moderna, and Merck & Co, are actively working on cancer vaccine research.

Last year, the U.K. government collaborated with BioNTech to launch clinical trials for personalized cancer treatments, aiming to benefit 10,000 patients by 2030. Moderna and Merck & Co have developed an experimental cancer vaccine that demonstrated promising results in reducing the recurrence or death from melanoma. 

The World Health Organization also recognizes six licensed vaccines against human papillomaviruses, known to cause various cancers, and vaccines targeting hepatitis B, a precursor to liver cancer.
