Zelenskyy sounds alarm on fresh Russian offensive
Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy warns of Russia’s upcoming offensive plans, stating Kyiv’s readiness with its own battlefield strategy amidst changes in military leadership
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed reporters in Kyiv on Feb. 25 that Russia is gearing up for a fresh offensive against Ukraine, set to begin in late May or the summer. However, Zelenskyy emphasized that Kyiv has a well-defined battlefield strategy of its own.
Speaking a day after the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Zelenskyy described the upcoming third year of the conflict as a “turning point.”
“The coming year will be pivotal, marked by elections, distractions, various challenges from both external and internal sources,” Zelenskyy stated at the “Ukraine. Year 2024” forum held in Kyiv.
Zelenskyy indicated his anticipation of Russia preparing counter-offensive maneuvers either by late May or early summer. He mentioned, “There exists a plan for a new counteroffensive, the plan is clear, although I cannot disclose the specifics. This plan is linked to changes in leadership, and there are corresponding adjustments.”
Last month, Ukraine’s president made a significant change in leadership by replacing the country’s previous esteemed army chief, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, with the ground forces commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi.
This move has been perceived as a significant gamble, especially as Russian forces continue to make territorial gains in certain eastern regions almost two years into the conflict. “We must prepare reserves. Russian forces’ readiness has not been up to par, and this is a fact,” Zelenskyy asserted.
