Yemeni government on Monday appointed Awad bin Mubarak, the foreign minister, as the new prime minister

Yemen’s internationally-recognized government has unexpectedly appointed Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, the current foreign minister, as the new prime minister.

Bin Mubarak, a former ambassador to the U.S. and a key figure in the Saudi-led coalition against the Houthis in 2015, replaces Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed as prime minister.

Bin Mubarak, known for his strong opposition to the Houthi rebels, was previously abducted by them in 2015 and held captive for several days.

Having served as the chief of staff of Yemen’s presidential office and the country’s envoy to the United Nations in 2018, he is considered one of the architects of the Saudi-led coalition that intervened to support the internationally recognized government after the Houthis captured the capital.
