Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus President Ersin Tatar shares apprehensions that even a ‘small mistake regarding the matter could turn region into a conflict zone like Gaza’

President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Ersin Tatar acknowledged Türkiye’s support, sharing apprehensions that even a ‘small mistake regarding the matter could turn it into a conflict zone like Gaza.’

“Everyone in Cyprus is concerned about the start of a new conflict. But we know we are not alone. Türkiye is here,” the president said, adding that “we do not want conflict. The Greeks should not want it either.”

Tatar, emphasizing the importance of reducing tension in Cyprus, stated that the only peaceful solution on the island is a two-state solution.

Therefore, stating that “the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has become an important issue,” Tatar said that states could take steps toward recognition in the near future.

Tatar expressed that Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Bangladesh could take steps to recognize the  Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus declared independence in 1983 and is not recognized by any state other than Türkiye.

The Republic of Cyprus, on the other hand, claims to be the sole official representative of the island.

However, the acceptance of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as an observer member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation is considered a significant step toward the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
