The Wall Street Journal has reported that the United States allegedly extended a political asylum offer to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in exchange for his resignation.

According to sources within the White House, the U.S. is attempting to persuade Maduro and other high-ranking officials in his administration to resign before a new presidential term in January, in exchange for asylum.

This offer purportedly includes assurances against extradition to Venezuela should they face judicial prosecution in the future.

These clandestine negotiations, particularly significant given the recent presidential elections on July 28, are seen as a potential glimmer of hope for the opposition, who have vehemently rejected the election results claimed by Maduro’s government.

The article also highlights that discussions regarding Maduro’s resignation were previously broached during secret talks between the U.S. and Venezuela in Doha, Qatar, in 2023.

However, Maduro reportedly refused to entertain these discussions.

This development comes on the heels of Maduro’s disclosure of confidential documents on social media, detailing an agreement reached with the Biden administration.

This accord allegedly stipulates that U.S. sanctions on Venezuela’s oil, banking, and gold sectors would be lifted if the opposition is permitted to participate in the presidential elections and if the election process is followed.

Maduro, in a press conference on Aug. 9, firmly warned the U.S. against interfering in Venezuela’s internal affairs, underscoring the sovereignty of his nation in a strong and unequivocal message.
