Pro-Palestinian demonstrations continue to surge across numerous states across the U.S., with university administrations and law enforcement encountering steadfast opposition from students despite their efforts to impede the protests.
Students organizing these demonstrations in solidarity with Palestine are vehemently demanding their universities to cease support for Israel, a stance that has triggered a series of confrontations with authorities.
Banning, threats of punitive measures, detainments and suspensions
Tents set up at Northeastern University in Boston were removed by police, and the administration alleged the protests turned into an antisemitic demonstration.
Three students were detained at California Polytechnic State University, while Northwestern University in Illinois saw the banning of tents and threats of punitive measures against protesters by the president.
The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York witnessed its museum closure following student encampment, indicating the broadening impact of the protests across diverse academic settings.
Thirty-four students were detained after police intervened with batons at Indiana University.
Protestors were threatened with a 3-year suspension and employees with termination at the University of Florida.
Three students were detained some tents were removed by police at Arizona State University.
Thirty-six people were detained, including 16 students at Ohio State University.
A protest in support of Palestine at the Auraria campus in Colorado, which is shared by three universities, resulted in 40 people being detained by police after students set up camps.
In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott labeled the protests as antisemitic and urged for the expulsion of participating students, as the number of detainees surged to 57 at the University of Texas.
U.S. students still continue Pro-Palestine protests
Students from various schools in the nation’s capital are continuing pro-Palestine demonstrations.
Despite administrative resistance, the demonstrations show no signs of abating, with students at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. removing police barricades to continue their protest against Gaza attacks and in solidarity with Palestinians.
At Columbia University, students have been engaged in a sit-in for 11 days, protesting the institution’s investments in companies financing Israel’s attacks on Gaza. The protest, now into its second week, underscores the persistent resolve of the demonstrators.
Students set up new camps on campus and demanded the university sever ties with Israel at the University of North Carolina (UNC).
