United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Wednesday called on countries to act with determination to prevent the further spread of conflict in the Middle East.

In a written statement, Turk emphasized the urgent need for action to avoid devastating consequences for civilians.

Countries urged to use influence to bring parties to negotiation table

“I urge all countries, including members of the U.N. Security Council, to act decisively to prevent the spread of conflicts in the Middle East, which could have potentially catastrophic consequences for civilians,” Turk said.

He stressed the importance of countries using their voices and influence to bring warring parties to the negotiation table.

Turk also called for common sense to prevail, expressing his hope that peace will triumph.

“We appeal to reason. Peace must prevail,” he said.
