UN confirms Europe hit record high temperature in 2021
The record high temperature of 48.8 degrees Celsius measured in recent years has been officially confirmed by the United Nations
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) noted that Europe recorded the highest temperature at 48.8 Celsius (119.8 degrees Fahrenheit) ever in 2021.
The previous record temperature of 48 degrees Celsius was set on July 10, 1977, in Athens and Elefsina, Greece. However, the WMO did not independently verify the 1977 record
“It is possible, even probable, that there will be more extremes in Europe in the future,” professor Randall Cerveny, rapporteur for the WMO, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) the year the temperature was measured.
That 1977 record was not independently verified by the WMO.
