A member of the dominant political party in South Korea was attacked by an unknown individual in Seoul and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital

A lawmaker from South Korea’s ruling party was shifted to hospital after being attacked by an unidentified assailant Thursday, local media reported.

Lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin from People Power Party sustained a head injury after being attacked by an assailant in the southern Seoul district of Gangnam, Seoul-based Yonhap News reported, citing government officials.

This incident, following a recent stabbing of another lawmaker named Lee Jae-myung, leader of the opposition Democratic Party, has raised concerns about the country’s deeply divided politics.

The extent of the lawmaker’s injuries is unclear, however, reports suggested they are not life-threatening.

The attacker of the other lawmaker expressed a desire to prevent him from becoming president. The assaulted lawmaker, a close ally of the president, was described as a victim of terrorism by a fellow party member.

The member called for an end to politics driven by hate, anger and violence.
