Russia on Wednesday said it holds “no illusions” about the prospect of Donald Trump being re-elected as U.S. president, warning that his anti-Russia stance and policies aimed at “containing Moscow” would likely persist.

In a statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Trump’s projected victory underscores widespread public discontent with the current administration’s policies and the Democratic Party platform, now led by Vice President Kamala Harris, who unexpectedly replaced President Joe Biden in the race.

Russia slams Democrat propaganda

“Despite an overwhelming propaganda campaign waged by Democrats against Donald Trump, relying on administrative resources and liberal media support, the Republican candidate, drawing on his previous presidency, focused on issues of genuine interest to voters—namely the economy and illegal migration—as a counterbalance to the White House’s globalist course,” the ministry said.

The ministry also noted the growing polarization in the U.S., describing it as a clash between states backing Democratic and Republican ideals, as well as a broader conflict between “progressive” and traditional values. It cautioned that Trump’s return to office could exacerbate these divisions, fueling further political discord.

Despite the shift in leadership, Russia emphasized that the U.S. political elite, regardless of party affiliation, remains committed to anti-Russia policies and a strategy of containment.

“This approach endures whether it aligns with Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda or the Democrats’ vision of a ‘rules-based world order,'” the ministry said.

Russia reaffirmed that it would engage with the next U.S. administration but remains firm in defending its national interests and advancing its military objectives, particularly in Ukraine. It stressed that Russia’s stance has not changed, adding that Washington is fully aware of its position.
