Preparations are underway within NATO to create a fund that will provide Ukraine with $100 billion over five years

NATO is preparing to establish a fund to provide Ukraine with $100 billion for five years, according to a report dated April 2 from Bloomberg, based on NATO sources not disclosed by name.

Bloomberg reported on April 2 that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg suggested creating an allied fund worth $100 billion for five years for Ukraine, citing unnamed NATO sources with knowledge of the issue.

The proposal, which requires approval from all 32 NATO members, is expected to be modified at the NATO summit in July.

Additionally, NATO could assume the operational duties of the U.S.-led Ukraine Contact Defense Group, which coordinates weapons deliveries by about 50 countries to Ukraine.

Challenges ahead for NATO

While NATO is united as a bloc against Russia’s full-scale invasion, levels of support between NATO member states, as well as their public statements on the threat to European security posed by the Kremlin, vary.

NATO members geographically closer to Russia, such as the Baltic states, have been more outspoken than others.

Previously, Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said that “not all countries understand the sense of urgency to act that there is,” referring to Russia’s war and supporting Ukraine.

On March 20, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said a Russian defeat in Ukraine would help prevent World War III.

However, it is known that Hungary pursues a policy close to Russia, which could complicate NATO’s decision-making processes.

Türkiye is also among the NATO members that maintain relations with Russia.

Ankara is trying to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv.
