Addressing high living costs in Greece, Prime Minister Mitsotakis highlights the dual role of consumer choices and government interventions in shaping Greece’s economic landscape

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attributed the responsibility for soaring prices partly to consumer behavior during an interview Monday.

Speaking to Star channel on Feb. 19, he emphasized the role of consumers in influencing market dynamics. “The Greek, as a sensitive consumer, is always searching for the best offer. However, through their choices and the pressure they apply, consumers can help improve competition and bring down prices,” Mitsotakis said.

Addressing the issue of inflation, the Prime Minister described it as not only a Greek but a European phenomenon.

He emphasized the government’s commitment, saying, “Our first government priority must be to limit, to the extent possible, the impact of inflation.”

He assured that measures to mitigate the effects of inflation are a top priority, citing actions taken to date, including interventions in price-setting and limiting profit margins on essential goods.

Regarding measures to support the economy, Mitsotakis promised an increase in the minimum wage. “The minimum wage has increased by 20% since we took office, and we are committed to reaching 950 euros by the end of our four-year term,” he asserted.

Mitsotakis also highlighted the role of technology and new communication methods in the economy.

“What I see, and I think this is quite encouraging, is that using new technologies and communication methods, many producers are now directly interacting with their customers and directly sending products to them. This bypasses intermediaries and allows consumers to negotiate better prices,” he said.

On the agricultural front, Mitsotakis highlighted the government’s efforts in combating illegal product labeling, especially in the dairy sector. This initiative, he claimed, has led to an increase in milk prices for farmers, helping offset rising production costs.
