Israel-backed lobbies fund campaign against Rep. Ilhan Omar
Pro-Israel donors in the U.S. have raised tens of thousands of dollars for Don Samuels, the opponent of Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar, in an effort to see her lose in the state’s primary election.
After Democratic Representatives Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman, both members of the “liberal-progressive” group known as “The Squad,” lost their primaries due to millions spent by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a similar campaign has been launched against Omar.
The Intercept reported on a WhatsApp group called “Zionists for Don Samuels Against Omar,” revealing that the group raised nearly $100,000 in just 24 hours. Michael Sinensky, a participant in the group, expressed his disappointment upon learning that AIPAC was not officially backing Samuels and instead encouraged his family and friends to donate to the campaign.
Sinensky has reportedly raised over $120,000 for Samuels since July 31.
Despite the funding against her, Ilhan Omar, who became the first hijab-wearing Muslim representative in the U.S. Congress after her election in 2018, has raised $1.6 million, tripling the $535,000 collected by her opponent, Don Samuels.
Cori Bush, alongside Michigan Representative Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Jan Schakowsky, held a joint press conference calling for a “permanent ceasefire” in Gaza and urged President Biden to take decisive action to end the violence.
