EU warns candidate country Georgia over disputed ‘foreign agent’ law
The European Union criticized Georgia’s ruling party for reintroducing a controversial foreign agent law, warning that ‘media freedom’ is critical for EU accession
In a statement released on Thursday, the European Union’s diplomatic wing emphasized the necessity of fostering an environment conducive to civic organizations and upholding press freedom, highlighting their pivotal role in a democratic society.
The EU has issued a warning to Georgia regarding its contentious decision to reintroduce a disputed foreign agent law. The EU underscored the critical importance of press freedom for Georgia’s EU accession.
The legislation would mandate organizations receiving foreign funding to register as “foreign agents.” This move is seen as a challenge to civil society and freedom of the press.
Last year, the Georgian government attempted to introduce a statute resembling measures utilized by Moscow to quash opposition voices. However, following extensive public outcry and significant street protests in Tbilisi, the proposal was ultimately withdrawn.
Despite warnings from Brussels about potential setbacks in democracy and human rights, Georgia was granted EU candidate status in December 2023.
