Ecuadorian authorities raid Mexico’s embassy in Quito to apprehend former Vice President Jorge Glas

Ecuadorian authorities apprehended former Vice President Jorge Glas, who sought refuge in Mexico, following a raid on the nation’s embassy in Quito.

It’s reported that several Mexican diplomats sustained injuries during the intervention by law enforcement agencies.

Mexico, expressing indignation over Ecuador’s violation of diplomatic immunity, has decided to sever all diplomatic relations with Ecuador.

The tension between the two nations is primarily due to Ecuadorian Vice-President Jorge Glas, who faces allegations of corruption in Ecuador, seeking asylum from Mexico and taking shelter at the Mexican Embassy.

Ecuadorian officials announced that Glas had been arrested and transfered to the appropriate authorities.

While the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Ecuadorian police’s assault as a violation of the Vienna Convention, Ecuadorian authorities argued that they were exercising the state’s sovereign rights.
