U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough delegate endorsements to become the Democratic Party’s nominee for the 2024 presidential election, according to reports.

In a statement on X, Harris expressed pride in her achievement and gratitude to her home state of California for its crucial support.

“Tonight, I am proud to have earned the support needed to become our party’s nominee, and as a daughter of California, I am proud that my home state’s delegation helped put our campaign over the top,” Harris said.

Harris plans to campaign nationwide in the coming months, addressing various national issues. “I fully intend to unite our party and nation and defeat Donald Trump,” she stated.

The announcement follows President Joe Biden’s decision on Sunday to forgo re-election and his subsequent endorsement of Harris. Although Biden’s endorsement is significant, it is not binding, as delegates retain the freedom to support their preferred candidate.

The Democratic National Convention will be held in Chicago from Aug. 19-22, and Harris is expected to be formally nominated there.
