Delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza becomes impossible: EU official
European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated that last weekend was one of the bloodiest in Gaza, emphasizing that delivering humanitarian aid to the region has become impossible.
Addressing the situation in Gaza, Borrell said, “This weekend was one of the bloodiest. Over 100 Palestinians were killed in the attacks.”
“It has become impossible to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza,” Borrell said, noting that aid is stuck at the borders, spoiling, and much of it will be destroyed without being used.
“The social fabric is being destroyed, and civil society is disintegrating,” Borrell added.
Recalling the EU-supported peace plan proposed by U.S. President Joe Biden, Borrell mentioned, “(Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu’s recent statement unfortunately confirms that this plan will not be implemented. However, we will continue to support such ideas because we desperately need a ceasefire that would allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. Otherwise, the tragedy will be of immeasurable proportions, as it already is.”
Borrell also stressed the growing risk of the conflict affecting southern Lebanon and spreading further, saying: “I am more worried. I am much more anxious. The crisis is expanding significantly every day. There are more bombings on both sides of the (Israel-Lebanon) border every day.”
In today’s meeting, Borrell expressed hope that EU foreign ministers would agree to intensify efforts to seek international support for an urgent cease-fire in Gaza.
