The Bulgarian government now requires applicants for citizenship to demonstrate proficiency in the Bulgarian language

On Wednesday, the Bulgarian government mandated proficiency in Bulgarian for citizenship applicants.

With the regulation made in the citizenship legislation, the Parliament requires those who want to obtain Bulgarian citizenship to know Bulgarian.

The law amendment proposal presented by the Council of Ministers was accepted unanimously by 154 deputies who voted in the 240-member Parliament.

Thirty-six pro-government Rights and Freedoms Movement (HOH) party deputies, whose members are mostly Turks and Muslims, abstained from the vote.

In the new regulation, the obligation to know Bulgarian will also apply to the children of people who regained their Bulgarian citizenship. Previously, children of people who regained Bulgarian citizenship were also directly naturalized.

Continuing Change in the ruling coalition Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) alliance Deputy Denitza Sacheva suggested intensifying the activities of Bulgarian schools so that the new regulation does not harm the Bulgarian diaspora abroad.
