Azerbaijan, Armenian hold peace talks in Berlin
Diplomatic efforts resume as Azerbaijan and Armenia’s foreign ministers gather in Berlin for peace discussions hosted by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock
Azerbaijan’s Jeyhun Bayramov and Armenia’s Ararat Mirzoyan are set to engage in peace talks in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday, hosted by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock at Villa Borsig, the guest house of the German Foreign Ministry.
Baerbock will have separate meetings with the foreign ministers before a trilateral discussion, during which she is expected to deliver an opening statement.
This diplomatic initiative follows a decision made earlier this month by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during talks on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
Tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia date back to 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan, along with seven adjacent regions including Kalbajar.
Azerbaijan reclaimed much of this territory during the conflict in the autumn of 2020, concluding with a peace agreement brokered by Russia, which provided a pathway for normalization.
Last September, Baku launched an anti-terrorism operation in Karabakh to establish constitutional order, resulting in the surrender of illegal separatist forces in the region.
