As the AK Party begins its congress process, speculation is growing about potential changes in both party leadership and the cabinet.
Comments made by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last week have sparked discussions within the party, hinting at possible adjustments to the cabinet. However, insiders suggest these changes may not happen in the immediate future.
Erdogan’s remarks stir speculation
President Erdogan’s statement about possible changes in the cabinet has become a hot topic within AK Party circles. While no immediate reshuffle is expected, party insiders believe any cabinet updates would likely coincide with the ongoing congress process. One source noted, “If there are changes, they will run parallel to the congress timeline.”
Expected changes in AK Party leadership
Significant changes are also expected within the AK Party’s Central Decision and Executive Board (MKYK) as the party prepares for its major congress planned for May. Erdogan has reportedly emphasized the importance of leveraging the expertise of local party leaders, MPs, and mayors during discussions with his close advisors.
The reshuffle could see some members of the current leadership replaced, while others might be reassigned to different roles.
Minor cabinet adjustments anticipated
Although a complete overhaul of the cabinet is not anticipated, sources within the AK Party suggest that three to five cabinet members may see changes.
“A major reshuffle should not be expected,” one party source explained, adding that the current cabinet is not perceived as problematic.
There is also ongoing discussion about splitting certain ministries and reducing the number of deputy ministers.
Younger faces may join AK Party leadership
Another key element of the party’s restructuring could be the replacement of long-serving members with younger figures. It is expected that those who have held leadership positions for extended periods may be given time to “rest,” while younger members are brought in to refresh the party’s image.
