Opposition’s Ozel accuses ruling government of declaring war, vows to accept challenge
Türkiye’s main opposition, Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Ozgur Ozel, accused the ruling government of declaring war on the opposition, stating that they acknowledge and accept this challenge.
His remarks come amidst heightened tensions following the arrest of Besiktas Mayor Riza Akpolat on corruption charges, which CHP members argue is politically motivated.
CHP holds emergency meetings
The CHP convened a lengthy Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting and held rallies in response to the developments.
Speaking after the meeting, Ozel directly criticized President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the ruling coalition, the People’s Alliance.
“This hostility from them—I don’t know how much longer we can respond within the bounds of politics. We see and accept their declaration of war,” Ozel said.
He warned that the government would face accountability at the ballot box in 2025, adding: “They will answer to the people for their actions, and in due time, they will also answer to justice for their unlawful orders.”
Focus on leadership transition
Ozel clarified that his statements were not about protests but about managing a transition of power. “This is not about organizing demonstrations. This is about preparing for the process of taking over governance,” he said.
“They must prepare to hand over power. This country is too sacred to be left to their mercy,” he added.
Bold decisions to be made
Ozel also indicated that the CHP would be taking significant steps in the coming days. “All relevant institutions will meet this weekend, bold decisions will be made, and those who need to know will be informed when the time comes,” he said.
He criticized Erdogan’s recent remarks, saying, “Today he said, ‘The biggest surprise is yet to come.”
What does that mean?
It means, ‘The judiciary operates under my orders, and there’s more you don’t know about.’ This is not how a state should function—it operates like your personal intelligence agency.”
