US Ambassador Flake highlights Türkiye’s key role in regional stability
U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye Jeff Flake emphasized the strengthening of strategic ties between the U.S. and Türkiye in an interview with CNN Türk, addressing various critical topics including defense cooperation, regional stability and bilateral relations.
Strengthened strategic partnership
In his conversation with Hakan Celik, Flake highlighted the robust nature of the U.S.-Türkiye partnership. “Our strategic partnership is stronger than ever,” Flake stated, noting a significant positive shift since his Senate confirmation hearings. He attributed this improvement largely to Türkiye’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which demonstrated Türkiye’s commitment as a NATO ally.
F-16 procurement and F-35 program
Flake described the recent F-16 agreement as a significant milestone. “The Block 70 F-16, being the most technologically advanced, ensures Türkiye’s interoperability with NATO partners,” he explained. He also addressed the S-400 issue hindering Türkiye’s participation in the F-35 program. “We welcome any progress towards resolving the S-400 matter and are open to renewing discussions on Türkiye’s involvement in the F-35 program,” he added.
Concerns over European Parliament elections
The ambassador expressed concern over the rise of far-right movements in the European Parliament elections. “The results are worrying, but we accept the incoming leaders,” he said, stressing the importance of stability within the European Union.
Israel-Hamas conflict
Addressing the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Flake reiterated the U.S.’ stance. “We continue to support Israel but insist on measures to safeguard civilians,” he stated. He acknowledged Türkiye’s support for a cease-fire and expressed hope for a lasting peace, though he admitted the complexity of achieving it.
Terrorist group PKK’s Syria election
Flake criticized the current conditions for elections in Syria, calling for fairness, transparency, and inclusivity. “We do not support the current election attempts,” he asserted. However, he highlighted ongoing cooperation with Türkiye in combating Daesh, emphasizing shared objectives.
The ambassador reaffirmed the U.S.’ longstanding designation of the PKK as a terrorist organization since 1997 while acknowledging differences over the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). “We recognize the complexity but are committed to working with Türkiye,” he stated.
US military presence in Greece
Flake dismissed allegations of a U.S. military buildup in Greece aimed at Türkiye. “These claims are baseless,” he declared, explaining that the presence in Dedeagac supports defense efforts in Ukraine. He praised Türkiye’s role in enforcing the Montreux Convention, highlighting the collaborative spirit between Türkiye and Greece in making the Aegean Sea a “sea of peace.”
Invitation to President Erdogan
Flake extended an open invitation for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to visit the White House, contingent on their schedules aligning. “We are ready for high-level meetings,” he confirmed, mentioning the possibility of such meetings occurring during a NATO summit.
Visa Issues: ‘Technical, not political‘
Addressing visa concerns, Flake clarified that the issues are technical, driven by high demand. “The visa problem is not political,” he emphasized, noting the prioritization of applicants seeking education and employment opportunities in the U.S. “We welcome visitors and are working to accommodate the demand,” he concluded.
