The U.N. General Assembly’s decision to enhance Palestine’s participation in its activities reflects growing international support for Palestinian statehood and the two-state solution

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its satisfaction with the decision of the United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly to allow Palestine to participate in U.N. activities with broader rights and privileges.

“We welcome the decision of the UN General Assembly to allow Palestine to participate in U.N. activities with broader rights and privileges,” the ministry’s written statement said.

The statement emphasized that this decision once again demonstrates the strong support of the international community for the right of the Palestinian people to have their own state and for a two-state solution.

It called on the international community to take concrete steps to stop the cruelty perpetrated by Israel in Gaza and to recognize the State of Palestine.

143 member states approved the vote

The resolution concerning Palestine, which requested the reconsideration of Palestine’s membership in the U.N. Security Council and the granting of additional rights to Palestine as an observer state, was adopted in yesterday’s vote at the U.N. General Assembly.

Nearly 80 countries, including Türkiye, co-sponsored the resolution, which was approved with 143 “yes” votes out of the 193-member U.N. General Assembly. While 25 countries abstained, including the United States, Argentina, Papua New Guinea, the Czech Republic and Hungary, nine countries, including the United States, voted “no.”

The resolution highlighted that Palestine meets the criteria for membership in the U.N. under Article 4 of the U.N. Charter and should, therefore, be admitted as a member.

Palestine applied for full U.N. membership in 2011 but did not receive the necessary support from the U.N. Security Council. ,

In 2012, Palestine gained “observer state” status at the U.N.
