Türkiye will throw its support behind Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the new NATO secretary-general position

Türkiye has announced its support for Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the new NATO secretary-general role, according to Turkish officials.

Rutte’s bid for NATO secretary general gained momentum after his meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul. Türkiye announced on Monday its backing for Rutte’s candidacy, signaling support to other NATO members.

Following his meeting with Erdogan at the Vahdettin Pavilion, Rutte emphasized the crucial role of Türkiye and its leadership in the southern flank of NATO during a joint press conference.

“Türkiye plays a decisive role. While doing so, it also makes efforts to resolve the situation in Gaza. At the same time, it has efforts regarding the terrible war in Ukraine. In that sense, you play an important role,” Rutte said.

Türkiye’s support for Rutte indicates a noteworthy diplomatic maneuver within the NATO alliance.
