Türkiye sees rise in drone numbers with 1.5M licensed pilots

Türkiye has witnessed a significant increase in the number of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and licensed drone pilots, according to Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu.

The number of drones grew by 12.5% in September compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 68,647, while the number of drone pilots increased by 6.6%, now totaling 1,536,993.

Growing use of UAVs across multiple sectors

Minister Uraloglu highlighted the increasing number of UAVs and licensed pilots in a written statement, attributing the rise to the training and initiatives provided by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM). “Thanks to the recent efforts in civil aviation, the number of UAVs and licensed pilots has seen substantial growth,” Uraloglu said.

UAVs are being utilized in a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, photography, cinematography, mapping, traffic management, security, logistics, and healthcare. Each year, approximately 5,000 to 8,000 new UAVs are registered in Turkiye’s dedicated UAV registration system.

Simplified registration, operational efficiency

The SHGM has created a dedicated registration system for UAVs, which facilitates easier licensing, flight permissions, and record-keeping. Minister Uraloglu also emphasized the development of the UAV Tracking and Traffic Management System Project, which aims to ensure the safe integration of drones into the country’s airspace.

“This project will enable accessible, affordable, efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly UAV operations,” he said.

Enhancing safety, security measures

One of the primary goals of the UAV Tracking and Traffic Management System is to address safety and security concerns posed by UAV operations.

“The project aims to securely manage all UAV operations in Turkiye without requiring any additional equipment to be fitted to the drones, ensuring a safe and smooth management system,” Uraloglu said.

With UAVs becoming an essential tool across various sectors, Turkiye continues to position itself as a leader in UAV technology and operations.

The ongoing developments in UAV management systems are expected to further enhance the country’s drone infrastructure, contributing to improved safety, security and operational efficiency.
