Türkiye offers aid to Greece amid devastating wildfires
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has conveyed Türkiye’s readiness to assist Greece in its battle against ongoing wildfires in a gesture of solidarity,
The offer, made within the framework of good neighborly relations, was relayed to the Greek government as the fires continued to ravage parts of the country.
Greece battles escalating wildfires
The fires have particularly affected the Varnavas region, located east of Athens, where nine villages and two hospitals have already been evacuated.
In response to the growing emergency, Greece’s Ministry of Health announced that health centers in Nea Makri and Kapandritios, as well as several hospitals in Athens, are on high alert because of the increased demand for medical services caused by the wildfires.
On high alert
Meteorological experts and government officials have issued warnings about worsening weather that are expected to exacerbate the fire situation through Thursday.
Vassilis Kikilias, Greece’s Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, has stated that nearly half of the country is currently under “red alert” for potential wildfire outbreaks.
Türkiye extends helping hand
According to diplomatic sources, Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s willingness to assist Greece during this critical time.
Greek officials have acknowledged Türkiye’s offer and indicated that they will consider the proposal, stating they may request Turkish aid if the situation necessitates additional support.
